Moving Checklist
Preparing to move is a multi-step process. Small details may go unnoticed until it is too late. The best moving plans begin two months in advance using a moving checklist to insure departure and arrival go smoothly.
Two Months in Advance
- Start a file to accumulate all moving checklist information, correspondence and documents.
- Contact several reputable moving companies and request free written cost estimates. Make sure each company is licensed and insured.
- Select a moving company and reserve specific times for pickup and delivery.
- Make a list of all moving boxes and supplies necessary to pack an entire household. A professional moving company will offer invaluable assistance with a moving checklist.
- Purchase moving boxes and begin packing seldom-used items first.
- Fill out the USPS change of address form. File the form at least six weeks before moving to prevent service interruption.
- Prepare form letters to cancel all utilities.
- Prepare a list of people and organizations that will receive new contact information. For example, include family, friends, professional organizations, banks, creditors, and magazine subscriptions.
- If changing cities, contact the chamber of commerce for a moving packet. The packet should include names and contact information for local utility companies when requesting new service.
- Consider having a garage sale to reduce costs, and perhaps pay all moving costs.
One Month in Advance
- Mail notices of the date of cancellation to utility companies at least 30 days before disconnection.
- Call new utility providers and request new service at least 30 days before arrival.
- Mail notices of change of address to individuals and organizations.
- Ask for help with children or pets when moving. Family and friends appreciate advance notice.
- Moving food can be expensive. Choose to eat canned goods and frozen foods to reduce moving costs.
- Consider hiring a professional cleaning service to prepare a new residence for immediate occupancy.
A Week in Advance
- Empty gas tanks on four-wheelers, lawn mowers, snow blowers and chain saws.
- Dispose of hazardous materials properly. For example, many lawn chemicals and insecticides cannot be transported once opened.
- Arrange to pick up new residence keys.
- Consider using color coded labels on moving boxes and include a list of contents on each box. Unloading will be quicker and easier.
- Conduct a moving checklist review several days in advance.
- Finish packing a full day in advance to allow time for last minute details.
- If you have questions or problems, ask for professional help. A great moving company is always willing to offer advice and assistance.
Moving Day
- Prepare a survival bag with extra cash, medications, cell phone, charger and other necessities to locate quickly.
- Surrender keys before leaving.
- Assure access to a new residence.
- Smile often and remain prepared for the unexpected. A great attitude can solve most moving day problems.
- Tip all movers who load or unload trucks.
