Headed to Houston? Here’s How You Can Avoid 3 Major Moving Mistakes

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015

movingtips

Are you getting ready to move to Houston soon? As one of the largest metropolitan areas in the U.S. and with an estimated population of over 2 million people, it’s safe to say, Houston, Texas is a popular place to be. However, while you may be excited to make your way to Houston, you may not be quite so enthusiastic about the actual move. Because let’s face, moving is a process, between trying to get organized let alone finding a place to live, it’s a lot for anyone to handle. Which is why it is so important to avoid some of these major moving errors. After all, why make the process more difficult than it needs to be?

1.) Packing at the Last Minute

We’ve all been there, at least at some point in time or another. It’s easy to procrastinate, especially when it comes to do something we would rather avoid. However, when it comes to moving, the last thing that you want to do is create a time crunch. Leaving ample time to plan your move is key. Not only are you likely to be less organized when you rush through a move, you’ll also likely become a frazzled mess during the process. Whether this is your first move or last move avoid waiting until the last minute.

2.) Skimping on Labels

Of course, you will remember what you put in that box, or will you? While it may seem like a hassle right now, skimping on labels when you’re in the process of moving is never a good idea. While you don’t need to create an extensive labeling system, be sure to mark your boxes accordingly. After all, it’s pretty easy to forget where you left something. You’ll likely be tired after your move, so plan ahead and make your life a little easier. Unpacking won’t be as difficult if you know exactly what you’re working with. Besides, do you really want the headache of trying to find something lost in the shuffle?

3.) Selecting the Wrong Movers

The cheapest option should do the trick right? Well, not exactly. Although locking in great moving rates can certainly be exciting, you’ll want to be cautious of selecting the wrong movers. While many of us assume that it could never happen to us, the reality is that there are some less than reputable moving companies out there. Moving companies that may cause items to break, become misplaced, and in some cases completely disappear. While saving a few bucks might seem like a great deal initially, be sure to do your research first. The right movers can make your experience a breeze while the wrong movers can make it a complete nightmare.

5 Helpful Hints for Overcoming Mover’s Anxiety

Wednesday, October 28th, 2015

houstonmovers

There’s no doubt about it, moving can be stressful. Between packing your belongings, getting your finances in order, and not to mention the day-to-day obligations let’s face it, moving isn’t always the easiest experience. Which it comes at no surprise then why so many people dread the very thought of moving. Whether you’re getting ready to relocate to Houston or even just moving within the city, we understand first-hand just how challenging moving can be. If you’re having anxiety at the very thought of your upcoming move or you’re just feeling more stressed than normal, then you’ll want to read over these 5 helpful hints.

1.) Address Your Concerns

Before getting too far ahead of yourself, address your concerns. What specifically is bothering you about the move? It’s natural for change to bring a bit of anxiety into your life. However, for many of us this anxiety can get out of control. In order to overcome mover’s anxiety, pinpoint specific fears or concerns. Remember, it’s ok to acknowledge what is bothering you and crucial to combatting stress.

2.) Incorporate Physical Activity

Did you know that one of the best ways to combat stress is to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine? Although you may feel too busy, adding even a small amount of physical activity can help you tremendously. Not only will you help your body by making physical improvements, you’ll also improve your mental state of being.

3.) Develop a Plan

Many people feel overwhelmed at the very thought of moving. After all, moving is time intensive and often involves a considerable number of unknown possibilities. However, there is something that can help, a moving plan. If you’re concerned about an upcoming move and you just don’t know where to start, begin to develop a plan. Determine a timetable of your move and be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to take care of all the details.

4.) Don’t Forget to Relax

This seems simple enough, but for many movers it’s often forgotten. It can be easy to get caught up in the hype of it all, but don’t overlook the importance of taking it easy. Sure, your move may be on a short time notice, but that doesn’t mean you should forget to relax. Stress will make your move more difficult so be sure to give yourself a break now and again.

5.) Breathe

Above all, don’t forget to breathe. While moving isn’t always a walk in the park, it doesn’t have to be a complete headache either. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious take a moment to breathe. As the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day”, tackle your to-do list one item at a time. By doing this not only will you feel better about your move, you’ll also be more efficient during the process. Remember, unnecessary stress will not help you during your move.

Is the Jeremy Lin – James Harden Experiment Working?

Is The Jeremy Lin - James Harden Experiment Working

The Houston Rockets definitely made some noise in the off season, bringing in big name talents Jeremy Lin and James Harden.  Rockets fans were excited for the type of success they haven’t really seen since Tracy McGrady fell off the map.  But now that the season is over halfway complete, is it possible to call the Jeremy Lin – James Harden combination a success?

Among Giants

First off, the Rockets certainly face an uphill battle in their division.  Facing off against the Spurs and Mavericks each year is no easy task.  True, the Mavericks have taken a big step back this year, but no one saw Memphis’ success coming, that’s for sure.  Having said that, the Rockets certainly have the talent to make some noise, if they can just find a way to perform well together.

Great Eight

Luckily, it doesn’t take much to make the NBA playoffs.  Houston is in contention for the last few spots in the West, but with LA, Portland, and Dallas nipping at their heels, they can’t slow down.  They also have a lot of work in front of them if they want to overtake any of the teams ahead of them besides Utah.  January was not kind to Houston, so hopefully February will be a different story.

Every team takes at least a little while to gel, so Houston fans should take heart in the recent success of the Rockets.  This year may lead to nothing but sneaking into the playoffs and ruining another team’s dreams, but the years to come should just keep getting  better.

Winter’s Coming…What to Expect in Houston, Texas

Winter in Houston, Texas

A lot of newcomers to the Houston area have questions about what to expect during the winter months in Houston.  Whether they’re coming from colder climates, are just worried about being prepared, or some combination of both, it’s certainly a legitimate question that needs to be addressed…

Typical Winter Weather in Houston, TX

Well, as we all learned back in grade school, you generally need freezing temperatures for snow to form.  Considering Houston’s average temperature in December is typically around 55 degrees, there’s usually not much of that white stuff to worry about.  In fact, since 1990, we’ve only had a total of 2.4 inches of snow, according to the Weather Warehouse (click here for more info).  So, if you’re wondering if you need to pack that toboggan for your move to Houston, I’d say no.

Other Winter Hazards in Houston

You might be thinking to yourself, “Self, even a couple of inches of snow is no big deal.”  That may be true, if you’re from a place that regularly sees snow.  Unfortunately, Houston isn’t exactly setup to deal with any amount of snow, so you’ll definitely see things shut down with even just a light snow cover.  It’s roughly analogous to what would happen in Wisconsin if they suddenly had an 80 degree, sunny day in the middle of winter.  They’d have no memory of how to use sunblock or hats, so sunburn would be rampant.  It’s pretty much the same in Houston, just the opposite temperature.

Whether it’s the beautiful weather or all the great attractions that are bringing you to Houston, you’ll want to take a look at affordable, reliable moving companies to get you there.  Click below for more info.

The Houston Astros are Moving to the American League

Saturday, November 10th, 2012

Houston Astros Moving to the American League

New league, new owner, new logo, new mascot.  Seems like everything is new for the Houston Astros right about now.  And, given the team’s struggles lately, that won’t necessarily be a bad thing.  So now that Houston is making the figurative move to the American League West, what does that mean for the city and the fans of the team?

New Faces, Same Challenges

Like for any of us, just because the Astros are moving doesn’t mean their life is going to get easier.  The National League Central wasn’t exactly chock full of great teams, but the AL West is definitely shaping up to be more of a challenge for their newest member.  Facing off against the Angels, the A’s, the Rangers and the upstart Mariners every year certainly won’t be easy.  The Astros are going to have to get a lot better pretty quickly if Orbit (the new mascot) is going to have anything to pump the crowd up about.  With any luck, the Astros will at least give the Rangers a run for their money once in awhile so that matchup can develop into a decent rivalry.

Opportunity Abounds

Having said all that, the time is certainly right for some success in this city.  The energy and enthusiasm that comes with new ownership should certainly help.  And the change of scenery from switching divisions probably couldn’t hurt, either.  I can’t imagine anyone will be expecting much from the Astros for awhile, so maybe they can get lucky and sneak up on some folks.  Better set our sites on something more like a 70 win season.
