There’s no doubt about it, moving can be stressful. Between packing your belongings, getting your finances in order, and not to mention the day-to-day obligations let’s face it, moving isn’t always the easiest experience. Which it comes at no surprise then why so many people dread the very thought of moving. Whether you’re getting ready to relocate to Houston or even just moving within the city, we understand first-hand just how challenging moving can be. If you’re having anxiety at the very thought of your upcoming move or you’re just feeling more stressed than normal, then you’ll want to read over these 5 helpful hints.

1.) Address Your Concerns

Before getting too far ahead of yourself, address your concerns. What specifically is bothering you about the move? It’s natural for change to bring a bit of anxiety into your life. However, for many of us this anxiety can get out of control. In order to overcome mover’s anxiety, pinpoint specific fears or concerns. Remember, it’s ok to acknowledge what is bothering you and crucial to combatting stress.

2.) Incorporate Physical Activity

Did you know that one of the best ways to combat stress is to incorporate physical activity into your daily routine? Although you may feel too busy, adding even a small amount of physical activity can help you tremendously. Not only will you help your body by making physical improvements, you’ll also improve your mental state of being.

3.) Develop a Plan

Many people feel overwhelmed at the very thought of moving. After all, moving is time intensive and often involves a considerable number of unknown possibilities. However, there is something that can help, a moving plan. If you’re concerned about an upcoming move and you just don’t know where to start, begin to develop a plan. Determine a timetable of your move and be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to take care of all the details.

4.) Don’t Forget to Relax

This seems simple enough, but for many movers it’s often forgotten. It can be easy to get caught up in the hype of it all, but don’t overlook the importance of taking it easy. Sure, your move may be on a short time notice, but that doesn’t mean you should forget to relax. Stress will make your move more difficult so be sure to give yourself a break now and again.

5.) Breathe

Above all, don’t forget to breathe. While moving isn’t always a walk in the park, it doesn’t have to be a complete headache either. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious take a moment to breathe. As the saying goes, “Rome was not built in a day”, tackle your to-do list one item at a time. By doing this not only will you feel better about your move, you’ll also be more efficient during the process. Remember, unnecessary stress will not help you during your move.

Is the Jeremy Lin – James Harden Experiment Working?

Is The Jeremy Lin - James Harden Experiment Working

The Houston Rockets definitely made some noise in the off season, bringing in big name talents Jeremy Lin and James Harden.  Rockets fans were excited for the type of success they haven’t really seen since Tracy McGrady fell off the map.  But now that the season is over halfway complete, is it possible to call the Jeremy Lin – James Harden combination a success?

Among Giants

First off, the Rockets certainly face an uphill battle in their division.  Facing off against the Spurs and Mavericks each year is no easy task.  True, the Mavericks have taken a big step back this year, but no one saw Memphis’ success coming, that’s for sure.  Having said that, the Rockets certainly have the talent to make some noise, if they can just find a way to perform well together.

Great Eight

Luckily, it doesn’t take much to make the NBA playoffs.  Houston is in contention for the last few spots in the West, but with LA, Portland, and Dallas nipping at their heels, they can’t slow down.  They also have a lot of work in front of them if they want to overtake any of the teams ahead of them besides Utah.  January was not kind to Houston, so hopefully February will be a different story.

Every team takes at least a little while to gel, so Houston fans should take heart in the recent success of the Rockets.  This year may lead to nothing but sneaking into the playoffs and ruining another team’s dreams, but the years to come should just keep getting  better.

Houston Job Growth

If you happen to have the freedom to relocate to any number of big cities, one of the biggest factors you’ll probably consider is the prospect for job growth.  So, while a city like Houston and its surrounding suburbs has a ton to offer, what’s the job situation like?

Even Job Numbers are Bigger in Texas

Job growth since 2000 indicates that Texas is doing quite well.  CNN/Money Magazine’s top 25 list of “Where the Jobs Are” includes five separate counties in Texas.  Something is definitely going right down here in the Lone Star state.  Fort Bend County, which includes Houston suburbs like Sugar Land and Missouri City, comes in at #2 on the list.  78.1% job growth since 2000 certainly isn’t anything to ignore (click here to read more).

More Recent Job Growth in Houston

The Business Journal took a look at private sector job growth since September 2007 in all metro areas larger than 500,000 people.  Houston tops the list by a wide margin, adding more than 122,000 jobs in a five year span (click for more).  What does that mean for you as a potential new resident of the Houston area?  It means Houston is the type of place where employers are willing to setup shop and start investing in expanded business operations and more employees.  Houston clearly offers a friendly business environment that encourages growth, which is great news for residents’ future job prospects.

How is the Home Buyer’s Market in Houston for 2013?

Saturday, December 29th, 2012

Buyer's Market in Houston

Population growth in Houston and the surrounding suburbs is still going strong, despite relatively poor housing numbers nationwide.  Houston obviously has a lot attractions and entertainment to offer to a wide range of people.  And housing prices can obviously vary considerably depending on what price point and geographic area you’re looking for.  But if you’re looking to relocate to the greater Houston area, what you can expect from 2013’s buyer’s market?

Buyer’s Advantage

As mentioned previously, a big city like Houston has a lot to offer people considering a move.  Houston is also well known for good employment numbers and a relatively low foreclosure rate.  These factors and others have the real estate site Trulia to predict Houston will be among the healthiest housing markets in the coming year (click here to read more).  That means a lot of good quality and prices for incoming buyers.

The Best Time to Buy a Home

It’s impossible to predict the best time to buy or sell a home.  If it was easy, there’d be way more rich folk out there.  Having said that, plenty of recent analyses have indicated the housing markets of several major cities have hit rock bottom and are on the rebound.  For buyers, that means the time is now to finally pull the trigger and dive into a new home (click here for more).

Current Home Prices in Houston, Texas

They say real estate is about three things: location, location, location.  So how are home prices in Houston doing?  Are we seeing any form of recovery yet?  Are there still good deals to be had for folks looking to relocate to the Houston area?

The Hot Housing Market in Houston

CultureMap.com took a look at the home markets in various big cities and determined that Houston’s is one of the hottest right now, particularly for residential properties.  They found that the inventory of homes for sale is low (meaning people are finally buying up available homes) and that builders have responded by constructing a higher number of new homes.  This is all good news, as it shows things are really picking up in the Houston area.  Check out the CultureMap.com article for more info (click here).

Home Prices by Neighborhood

Trulia is a very popular real estate website that features a ton of helpful information, particularly if you’d like to zero in on a specific neighborhood in Houston.  Their “heat map” lets you compare Houston neighborhoods by average listing price, average selling price, popularity, etc.  If you’re flexible on where you’re going to live in the Houston area, this map is a very valuable tool.  Trulia also provides information on how much prices have changed over time.  Click here to visit the Trulia heat map.

Winter’s Coming…What to Expect in Houston, Texas

Sunday, November 25th, 2012

Winter in Houston, Texas

A lot of newcomers to the Houston area have questions about what to expect during the winter months in Houston.  Whether they’re coming from colder climates, are just worried about being prepared, or some combination of both, it’s certainly a legitimate question that needs to be addressed…

Typical Winter Weather in Houston, TX

Well, as we all learned back in grade school, you generally need freezing temperatures for snow to form.  Considering Houston’s average temperature in December is typically around 55 degrees, there’s usually not much of that white stuff to worry about.  In fact, since 1990, we’ve only had a total of 2.4 inches of snow, according to the Weather Warehouse (click here for more info).  So, if you’re wondering if you need to pack that toboggan for your move to Houston, I’d say no.

Other Winter Hazards in Houston

You might be thinking to yourself, “Self, even a couple of inches of snow is no big deal.”  That may be true, if you’re from a place that regularly sees snow.  Unfortunately, Houston isn’t exactly setup to deal with any amount of snow, so you’ll definitely see things shut down with even just a light snow cover.  It’s roughly analogous to what would happen in Wisconsin if they suddenly had an 80 degree, sunny day in the middle of winter.  They’d have no memory of how to use sunblock or hats, so sunburn would be rampant.  It’s pretty much the same in Houston, just the opposite temperature.

Whether it’s the beautiful weather or all the great attractions that are bringing you to Houston, you’ll want to take a look at affordable, reliable moving companies to get you there.  Click below for more info.
