Moving to Houston

I moved to Houston in the fall of 2007 and I while I wasn’t sure what I would get, I now can tell you that I love Houston. However, if you are contemplating moving to Houston, there are probably a couple of things that you should know to take best advantage of the sprawling, fun city. When moving to Houston, be very aware of the fact that it is a large city filled with interstates. Anywhere that you work, there will be a commute. Finding the part of Houston you want to be in and where it is in relation to your job is going to make your every-day life much easier. It is difficult to avoid commutes that are any shorter than half an hour, but you can and should look for the most direct route that avoids both Highway 290 and as much of I-610 as is possible. The suburbs (The Woodlands, Sugarland, Humble) are very nice, just be careful how much time you will be forced to sit in the car every day. One of the best parts of moving to Houston, though, is that there is always something to do, someone to see, some form of entertainment for those of all ages. Just because Houston is not the art city that New York City is, don’t discount its museums, art shows, and concerts. There is a lot going on and it is well worth checking out. Another advantage in moving to Houston is that it is a city with money. With several major businesses, most notably the large petroleum industry presence, the city maintains a more steady economy when the rest of the nation is rocking on its heels. This isn’t to say that we don’t feel the recessions at all, just to say that it is somewhat less of a panic. Our job market tends to stay stay steadier and overall we fare better even in things such as the housing market when things go bust. All in all, moving to Houston is a positive for me and my family, may you fare as well.
